Basement Brew – Label Design

A beer bottle label design was definitely a first for me, but when told to “do whatever,” well… I did just that. So the first thing I did (of course) was create an illustrated version of the creators behind Basement Brew.

It was a very messy illustration when I first created it. Mostly because I had fun with it, instead of picking everything about it apart and worrying about making mistakes, I kind of just let it happen… I liked the way the lines had looked when drawing it out in Photoshop, but then I imported the illustration into Illustrator & made it a vector piece for a more “polished” look. I’m definitely happy with the outcome.

The not-so perfect lines made the cartoon look hand-drawn, giving it that home-made effect (like the beer). The logo is mostly type based with a tiny bit of line work. Being that these two are literally brewing beer in their basement, (the first batch was amazing by the way) I wanted to subtly add stairs to the business name “Basement Brew.” The logo is in black, because each different batch they make will have a different color label.

I had a lot of fun creating these labels, and look forward to creating more for these two! You can follow Basement Brew’s progress over on their Instagram!

June Book Review

I’ve been a bit slow with reading the various books I have waiting for me. In February, I was banking on the idea that Summer was almost here and that I would finally have time to read. Of course I was wrong, ha! P.S. there are cookies in this post & if you’d like to read about them you can click here.

Since I’ve been done with school, I’ve been doing the things I’ve been anxious to start doing since school started. Though, I’ve also been reminding myself that taking mental health days to read isn’t a bad idea either. So I’ve picked up two books from my shelf, and decided to read!

Book #1: Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

This book only took 2 pages before I was hooked. There were so many questions I needed answers to. I’m always a nerd when it comes to Sci-Fi books, so when I found out there were 2 more books in the trilogy- you can imagine how I reacted. I kid you not, I read this book in 4 days because I just needed to know.

To my surprise, there’s a movie based on this book. I almost fell over and died because I was so excited to see how they portray all of the monsters that come up in the book. Of course, they didn’t run into the mirror monster or the underground tower, so I was upset. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sci-fi mysteries, and has a big imagination. This world is, for me at least, something I would’ve never come up with by myself. Buy this book on Amazon and have it in 2 days using Amazon Prime!

Book #2: Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland

Again, another page turner. If you’re like me and loved John Green’s Paper Towns, the Fault in Our Stars, and Looking for Alaska – you’ll seriously love this book. Teen love, except it’s the unusual kind. I loved every second of reading all about the main character, Henry. Following him on his adventure of pursuing a semi-dead girl was probably just as heart breaking for me as it was for him. Sutherland makes you just as curious about Grace (the girl Henry inevitably falls for) as Henry is and because of this, I read this book in a little less than 3 days.

Quotes I Highlighted:

  • “The best thing the universe ever gave us is that we’ll all be forgotten” (62).
  • “They do it because they believe that some things are more beautiful when they’ve been broken” (171).
  • “Stories with happy endings are just stories that haven’t finished yet” (276).
  • “But love is scientific, man. I mean, it’s really just a chemical reaction in the brain” (285).
  • “a piece of paper can only be folded so many times before it cannot be folded any more” (302).

Okay, I knew this was a sort of sad book, but when I went back over the quotes I had highlighted while reading it, wow. LOL! It really was a good read though, and I’d definitely recommend it. Buy it on Amazon and have it in 2 days using Amazon Prime!

Portfolio Update: Hair by Moran – Business Card Design

I’ve been having a lot of fun with business card design lately (mostly because I’m not designing my own). Colleen, the hair stylist behind @hairbymoran, was ready to start branding her and her business and I’ve been excited for the day! We started with creating a mood board, of colors she likes (and didn’t like) as well as picking a part designs and telling me what she liked about each one.

Colleen is all about bobby pins, so I knew I had to sneak one into her “logo” and I did just that. On social media she goes by @hairbymoran, so I made it so that Hair by Moran was a part of a bobby pin. I’m so in love with her style, and the colors she wanted to work with.. Below are a few mock ups featuring her new business card design, as well as a what her Hair by Moran logo would look like on a window!

Beach Day with my Babes – Catch Up & Chit Chat

Today was actually a beach day.. It was so beautiful out! The weather was amazingly warm, cloudy but clear enough to travel on over to the beach. Though it was a short trip, it was an adventurous one. Ned (my cat) was able to escape the house for a bit, and I think it’s safe to say he enjoyed his time out.

Here’s a few pics from our trip to one of my favorite beaches on the North Shore! We initially went to see the seals, sunbathing on the rocks not too far from the coast, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to take Ned out for some exploring. At first, he was skeptic — he didn’t particularly enjoy the seagulls’ screaming at him — and decided to run at Pat and climb his leg to safety because of all of the new noises. Though after some time, he loved smelling EVERYTHING and running about. Beach day was a definitely a success!

It was nice to get out and be at the beach again, I’m definitely counting down the days until Spring!! I can’t stand the snow & cold weather… It’s too grey and it gets boring. Today was a good reminder that Spring is coming up sooner than later, and I cannot wait.

Currently I’m working on a few projects, as well as doing homework for classes & freelancing (am I crazy yet?), I can’t wait to share more about all of this! For now, I hope these cat pictures make your day. Isn’t Ned the sweetest? He’s the only cat that I know who likes walks on the beach & car drives!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and I hope you’re having a great start of the new week!

Design Portfolio Update: Rebel – Logo Design

I’m so excited to share this new business in my design portfolio update! The creators behind Average Dude TV, Matt & Matt, have also created a new clothing business called Rebel. Their mission is to spread the mindset of moving against the grain, against the crowd, and being different. I’m always happy to create with them because their mission to inspire others, aligns perfectly with mine!
